Q: If I do not have my vertical block jig, is there an option on
the new FANUC CiC Series EDM to perform a manual touch off
through discharge to vertical the machine?
A: Yes, FANUC has released through the new software edi-
tion 11.0 a function that allows you to do a vertical alignment
to a workpiece using discharge.
Figure 1 shows the Setup and Vertical Taper Screen.

This is the screen for the vertical adjustment procedure. For
the full procedure, reference Tech Bulletin TSB-E137, Wire
Alignment by Discharge.
Follow the Guidance through each step of the procedure visual-
ly checking the discharge and adjusting the U/V axis so the
sparking is uniform to the top and bottom of the workpiece.
There will be a discharge witness mark on the part, so be sure to use a piece of work material for that purpose.
Q: Our EDM department includes FANUC
light turns on automatically at power up. Is it
possible to have the light power down auto-

matically after a certain time period? We are
hoping to do what we can to save energy.
A: Yes, you can set the light to automatically
power off after a specifi c time that you can set.
See Figure 1, the Power Consumption Monitor.
Figure 2
Choose the Energy Saving tab and you will see
the Auto power off option for the light. You can set whatever time you would like for the light to turn off. This will auto-
matically turn off both LED lights on your machines in the time that you entered. Note that the units are minutes. At any
time you can press F1 on the keyboard to turn the lights back on.

Q: We recently purchased some GF Machining Solutions
CUT X Series Wire EDM machines with ISPS technology.
What exactly does ISPS do?
A: The acronym ISPS stands for Intelligent Spark Pro-
tection System. It is proprietary GF Machining Solutions
technology that enhances both the precision and reliability

of the EDM process. It works by continuously monitoring
the spark distribution along the wire and making real-time
adjustments to ensure optimal cutting conditions and helps
to prevent wire breakage – see Figure 1.
Figure 1
As you operate your new machines, the ISPS functionality
will allow you to implement automation and run the equip-
ment unattended without the need for constant monitoring. Of course, with unattended operation, the goal is to
achieve high reliability operation. ISPS helps you to achieve that goal. You should also see reduced wire consump-
tion and reduced machining time compared to your other machines.
Should you have any specifi c questions relating to this feature, please be sure to reach out to our Applications
Support Group. (Continued on page 62)
