maintain a specifi c speed, but it also includes a high-resolution Heiden-
hain encoder. Carl Hirschmann considers it a “3-in-1” Rotary Table. It can
function as a spindle, or a precision positioning indexer, or a turn-and-burn
axis when directly integrated to a machine control as an additional axis.
I asked Josh if there were other novel features. He replied yes, there were
a number of novel features. One of the high-reliability features was replac-
ing the typical brushes with microfi ber rings. They support a full 50 Amps

of cutting power, but are not subject to wear in the same way that brushes
wear. Another novel feature is the use of a color LED display mounted on
the top of the housing, which provides status and notifi es the user of any
maintenance and error messages. Plus, the OEM may choose to access
sensor data via the internal web server.
One very nice feature is the use of a lubrication cartridge that is attached
to the housing and continuously supplies the proper lubrication to the
bearings.
All in all, it looks as if Carl Hirschmann engineers have packed a lot of
features into this unit.

MMK MATSUMOTO CORP. Portland, OR
Although MMK was not exhibiting this year at IMTS, their equipment was present in many OEM
booths. I was fortunate to run into MMK Matsumoto Vice President Sam Noguci and one of his
staff, Nicole Patsey.
I have known Sam for many years, but met Nicole in person for the fi rst time at IMTS. Nicole
and I corresponded regarding this feature.
MMK manufactures an extensive range of rotary tables,

chucks, and related accessories. Most EDM Today
readers know MMK for their EDM rotary tables. For
this extended coverage feature, Sam wanted to make
EDM Today readers aware of the latest model, SAT100.
Sam explained that the SAT100 is purposely designed
specifi cally for EDM applications such as turbine vanes
for both aerospace and power generation applications.
The SAT100 is unlike other typical trunnion tables in
that it uses a unique cantilever design that allows the
workpiece to rotate in place. The design vastly shortens
the required spindle axis travel, as the machine does

not need to chase the workpiece.
Sam told me a little about why MMK focuses on aerospace applications. He
is estimated to be more than double that of the medical, space, naval, auto, and
energy industries.
Sam added that as the SAT100 Rotary Tables are equipped with a distinct canti-
levered tilt-centered design, they occupy a smaller overall footprint. This creates
opportunity for a greater number of machines within the same space, a distinct
competitive advantage for machines equipped with MMK rotary tables.
Sam highlighted MMK’s greatest strength to be that of adaptability. Throughout
its long history in the fi eld, MMK continues to distinguish itself by demonstrating

the fl exibility to meet any challenge or requirements. To provide smooth and
