Affectionately known as “The Fixture Guy,” Ram
Precision Tool Founder and President Joe Walter shared some of his in-
sight on the direction of the tooling market and how Ram is responding.
Joe believes that as more and more companies adopt quality systems,
they will reveal the need for better process control. The use of quality
tooling and fi xturing is essential as a foundation of a robust process
control system. Joe added that it was this logic that helped RAM
Precision to become a “lean” operation and allows for pricing that is
attractive to smaller EDM shops.
Ram’s product portfolio is quite extensive. They make the very popular

rail systems for Wire EDM and offer a complete offering of Bases, Vices,
V Blocks, Mini Fixtures, Manual Indexers, and much more.
Many of the products in Ram’s extensive catalog show some very inno-
vative features. We asked Joe how some of these novel features came
about. Joe replied that there are really two parts to that answer. One is
that he began his career as a toolmaker apprentice and learned his trade
alongside expert toolmakers. He knows fi rsthand what toolmakers need to be productive. The second part to the
answer is that Ram has always listened to their customers. Many of the innovations have come out of toolmakers
saying, “Hey Joe, I have an idea on how to improve this.” In a sense you could
say that Ram’s products are designed by toolmakers for toolmakers.
We asked Joe whether there was something specifi c that he would like EDM

Joe added that in today’s highly competitive production environment, having a
fi xture that simplifi es setup and makes setup faster, or more accurate, will save
time and money. Having just the right fi xturing can make the difference between
a highly profi table job and a breakeven job.
