Patrick and Ryan also told me about their in-
house lab and the recent trend in the aerospace
industry of considering the life of EDM oil.
We all know that the many standards that are
established are in place to assure consistency
from part to part, as well as maintaining surface
quality, but as an EDM produced part, the oil
chemistry changes with the addition of dissolved

metals that cannot be fi ltered out – even with
1µm fi ltration level. CLC’s lab can perform tests to
see how the oil has changed. It is, of course, up to
the OEMs to determine the contamination levels
that would mandate the oil be changed. It was in-
teresting to learn these proactive steps are being
taken to ensure the quality of aerospace parts.
One of the perhaps not-so-surprising facts about
CLC is that they supply oil as private label brands
to many of the top distributors in North America. Their fl agship synthetic EDM oil, EDM 3001 Lite, is the preferred
brand for several top OEMs.

CLC is a family-owned business producing EDM oil and other metalworking fl uids since 1976. They are
ISO-9001:2015 certifi ed and members of the Tooling and Manufacturing Association (TMA), the Independent
Lubricant Manufacturers Association (ILMA), and the Illinois Manufacturers Association (IMA).

When it comes to cutting tools, few companies can match Crystallume's
range and diversity. I was met in the booth by Ed Francis, Crystallume’s
Vice President of Imagineering. No, this is not a typo. Imagineering is a

great title for someone like Ed, a published authority on cutting tool design who works for a company that pushes the
boundaries of innovation.
Crystallume is, of course, known as a
diamond coater. They will coat custom-
er-supplied cutting tools and wear parts.
However, Ed pointed out that they are also
a tool company. Ed showed me some of
the tools on display in the booth. The num-
ber of options and range was very impres-
sive. They offer cutter diameters down as
low as 0.005” and as high as 0.500”. They

could produce larger diameter tools, but
after 1” diameter, it really makes more
sense to use indexable tooling.
Most of us in the EDM community know
Crystallume for its tools, which are ideal
for cutting graphite. However, they also
work well for cutting carbon fi ber, green
ceramic, glass-fi lled plastic, and gener-
al-purpose uses.
