is used to cool all key components to counter thermal growth and
maintain dimensional accuracy over the long term.
The machine also features built-in CMM functionality to automatical-
ly measure the electrode after machining using the Renishaw probe.
A complete inspection report is created and exported.

MAKINO
Booth 338519
I was welcomed into the Makino booth by Brian Coward, Makino’s EDM Product Line
Manager. Brian arranged for me to get a presentation of their three EDM core technolo-
gies that were being displayed at IMTS.
Brian introduced me to Taylor Cox, a Makino Senior
Applications Engineer. Taylor showed me their model
UX3 shown in a production setting with Fanuc CRX-
10iA cobot loading workpieces. The demonstration was
showcasing the ability to perform waterless threading
through small holes. Taylor discussed the advantages of
Makino’s Hyper Drive Extreme Wire Guide System. It is a

simplifi ed system based on AC servo motors. It has re-
duced maintenance requirements and provides a greater
range of tension control with better tension precision.
High-reliability threading is supported through sophisti-
cated wire tip preparation. Taylor explained how the wire
is cut, stretched (which reduces diameter), annealed,
and the tip is pointed.
The UX3 comes standard with dual high-speed fl ush pumps and H.E.A.T. technology, providing greater cutting speed. When
combined with a cobot, large wire spool, and high-reliability threading, the UX3 is well suited for lights-out productivity.
After Taylor fi nished his presentation, he turned me over to Robert Edenburn, another Senior Applications Engineer.
Robert walked me through their showcase Sinker display, the

model EDAF3 H.E.A.T machine. The machine was equipped
with an MMK SAT Series A/B-axis. The demo showed a work-
piece mounted on an EROWA pallet and installed in a chuck on
the A/B-axis. The demo was showing a precision part pick-up
in 5-axis. After pick-up, a dual rib electrode was loaded, and
ready to cut.
Robert pointed out some of the unique features that were not
visually apparent. One was a high-speed jump at speeds up
to 20M/minute. This is, of course, great for fl ushing on part
geometry such as deep ribs. Robert explained that, with the
high-speed jump, Makino has added cooling to the ball screw

and casting to maintain thermal stability and accuracy.
