IMTS Update

Based in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, Mersen is a manufacturer of premium EDM
graphite materials. I was welcomed to the booth by Kiel Nissel, a Technical
Sales Engineer at Mersen. Kiel has been with Mersen for several years and is a
familiar face to see at IMTS.
Kiel stated that they are at IMTS to familiarize graphite users with Mersen’s materials and quality. Mersen had several
very impressive samples of machined graphite on display.

Mersen manufactures the Ellor brand of EDM graphite.
It is available in seven different grades appropriate for
all EDM applications. Kiel talked about the balance
that customers consider when choosing the right
material. He elaborated that the four main factors are
wear resistance, metal removal rate, surface fi nish,
and machinability. The Ellor product group ranges
from materials with an average grain size of 12 µm,
which is ideal for higher power cutting where surface
fi nish requirements are 177 Ra(µinch) or higher. At
the other end of the scale is a material with a grain

size of 4 µm, which can produce a surface fi nish of 16
Ra(µinch). There are many choices in between that will
fi t any project.

Kiel reminded me that Mersen EDM graphite products are sold
solely through distribution. He added that Mersen is seeing an
increasing global demand for its EDM graphite materials. To satisfy
customer demand and provide timely delivery, Mersen is investing
in adding production capacity. Kiel explained that they are seeing
increased demand from all industries, but in the U.S., the semicon-
ductor industry was one of the major growth areas.

When asked what else he would like EDM Today subscribers to
know about Mersen, Kiel indicated that Mersen is committed to
staying on the leading edge of EDM graphite technology. He added
that Mersen has signifi cant R&D capabilities. They have 18 R&D
centers and operations in 33 countries around the world. Customers
can be assured of getting great materials and consistent quality

The MC Machinery
booth seemed to be
a constant beehive of
activity. Mary Maguire, MC Machinery’s Marketing Manager,
welcomed me into the booth. The booth was huge and had a
lot of equipment on display.
One of the highlights of the booth was the Eagle V9 5-axis
high-speed mill. It is ideal for both large graphite electrodes
