IMTS Update
The EDAF-Series on display was very nice in that it had a stationary worktable and a rise/fall work tank to facilitate
easy setup. The Hyper-i control looked very intuitive. It was an impressive demonstration.
Robert turned me over to Makino Applications Engineer
Jake Madoffori to see the BX3 EDM drill. I asked Jake
what’s new with this model. He said that the BX3 was
designed from the ground up as an EDM drill. It has many
innovative features, such as allowing access to elec-

trode and guide storage during machining. It also has an
improved breakthrough detection system that is 100%
reliable. It even allows programming of additional drill
travel after breakthrough. Plus, for special applications,
breakthrough detection can be disabled where the drill cuts
to a programmed depth.
Water storage is internal, which minimizes the footprint
and provides for greater thermal stability of the frame, re-
sulting in improved accuracy. The demonstration featured
a Renishaw probe performing 5-axis 6-point probing of the
workpiece to create a local program offset, assuring exacting hole placement.

Jake explained that the machine can be supplied with different levels of automation. In addition to electrode and guide
changing, it could also be provided with workpiece changing. The machine itself looked very aesthetically appealing in
that it was fully enclosed. Jake stated that it meets CE requirements for safety. The Hyper-i control looked great.
In general, I was impressed with all three EDM displays at IMTS, and the presentation by Makino’s very knowledge-
able applications engineers.

MANN+HUMMEL is known for its advanced fi lter technology, which serves many
industries. Dating back to the 1940s, MANN+HUMMEL began producing automo-
tive fi lters for Volkswagen. Over the years, they have grown to more than 22,000
employees and have a global presence. They have become one of the world’s
largest fi ltration manufacturers, particularly in the area of industrial fi ltration.
MANN+HUMMEL Business Development Manager Bob Kruger welcomed me to their booth. Of course, they had on
display the many fi lter technologies that the EDM community knows and most likely already uses. They have fi lter
options for all major manufacturers of
EDM machines, including Wire, Sinker,
and Drilling EDMs.
A new offering caught my eye: their
new Tri-Mist electrostatic oil mist fi lter.

Their model 850 was on display. This
is a smaller model within the Tri-Mist
family. It is effective for both mist and
smoke. This technology is different
than more traditional systems in its
simplicity. Unlike traditional mechan-
ical mist separation, the Tri-Mist uses
an electrostatic separation method.
Bob stated that it can achieve a high
separation effi ciency of 99.95%. The
unit requires little maintenance and

very low consumable costs. It also has
a very low amperage draw.
