I wish that I would have seen the AMR in motion, but I did watch
many of the videos that System 3R has online. In seeing the
fl exibility, and I will say it, simplicity of the system, there is no
doubt this technology will be used in manufacturing plants of
the future. Although the technology is cutting-edge, I reference
simplicity from the standpoint that you can have just one AMR
serving a great number of machines. With WorkPartner 1+ units
acting as an interface between the AMR and the various ma-

chines, there is no need to wait. The AMR can load and unload
from the WorkPartner while the machines are busy cutting.
This is a simple, elegant design.
Most of us in the EDM industry know the name System 3R for
its tooling and fi xturing. Craig and I laughed a bit, knowing that,
to this day, there are still customers out there using System 3R 20mm shanks! But the truth is that it is a testament
to the quality of 3R components. Although the System 3R booth at IMTS focused on advanced automation, they still
manufacture a complete line of tooling for Wire and Sinker EDM—as well as for additive and other industries.

TEBIS
Booth 133230
tebis was founded in 1984
by partners Bernhard Rind-
fl eisch and Jens Hagen,
outside of Munich, Germany. By 1986, they had introduced
the fi rst 3D CAD/CAM system designed for MS-DOS and
the fl edgling desktop PC market. As the years passed, tebis
became a leading provider of CAD/CAM. Today, tebis has a
global footprint with over 400 employees.

As I entered the tebis booth, I was greeted by Michael
Thiessen, Sales Manager, and Lee Van Every, Partner Ac-
count Manager. I had seen a tebis presentation at the YCM
Alliance grand opening of their Michigan technical center. I
was impressed with the features. I asked Michael and Lee
if they could tell me what was unique about tebis. Michael
explained that tebis is designed for both speed, automation, and ease of use. One of the very interesting concepts
that Michael shared was the idea of scanning the machine. He elaborated that, as part of the integration into a
company, the tebis team goes in and uses laser scanning equipment to scan the machine and gain an understanding
of the accuracy of its movements. That scan, or scans for multiple machines, allows tebis to adjust the CAM output
to maximize accuracy and improve surface fi nishing. Michael also explained that tebis offers more than

just CAD/CAM software. They produce MES (manu-
facturing execution system) software. This Enterprise
solution allows companies to improve their manufac-
turing processes and increase productivity. I asked
Michael to explain more about how their MES sys-
tem works. He suggested that, to achieve maximum
productivity, companies must look at coordination
between suppliers, machines, employees, and other
projects. They often have specifi c budgets and
delivery timelines. tebis’ MES system is a tool that
allows them to look at all of the variables and create

the most effi cient project plan.
