Sinker EDM, both of which were introduced at IMTS. An EROWA Robot Compact
80 connected the machines. The demonstration showed how electrodes could
be machined in the mill, stored in the Compact 80, and then loaded into the
Sinker EDM. With the ability to load both electrode and workpiece, the work cell is
designed for full “lights-out” productivity.
The next demonstration I looked at was for aerospace. It included a K4HL CNC
EDM Drill with a cobot. The cobot pulls palletized turbine blades from a rack and

loads them into the EDM. The EDM drills the holes, and the cobot returns the
fi nished blade to the rack. The one visible feature that I noticed was an incredibly
compact footprint. Yet, with such a small package, the machine holds a large
number of electrodes and guides.
Electrodes are held in a cartridge
system, each holding up to 25
electrodes. There are suffi cient
electrodes to support the contin-
uous machining of thousands of holes. With advanced breakthrough
detection for high-reliability operation, this compact work cell is capable
of tremendous autonomous production.

The medical demonstration included Sodick’s new SR12 robot. This very
compact robot was feeding an AD35L Sinker. The medical area also
featured a VN400Q Wire EDM.
Marius showed me a very impressive
medical part they were making. Even with
a 24MP camera, the image quality is not
that great. Mario described this tiny part
as being used in atherectomy, a medical
procedure to remove plaque from the
inside of an artery.

SST CONSUMABLES
SST is one of the leading
EDM consumable com-
panies in North America.
Although their booth was busy, I was able to sit down with
Jim Rickert, an SST Sales Engineer. I asked Jim what the
focus of the show was and whether there were any specif-
ic technologies or products being highlighted.

Jim confi rmed yes and
showed me an SST brand
compact CNC EDM Drill. This
machine, model FE2, provides
travels of (X, Y, Z) 11.81” x
7.87” x 11.81”. It features a
15” touch screen HMI with a
Windows OS. It features SST’s HP1+ high-speed discharge circuit for faster cutting and
a stable cut. One very nice feature is a programming function that allows the control
to read the Wire EDM program and extract the wire thread points. It then automatically
determines the coordinates of the hole locations. (Continued on next page)
